Mayor caged at Kondengui for FCFA 190 milion Scam

Some municipal authorities have transformed the councils to private enterprises from where they enrich themselves at the expense of the population. The heavy arm of the law is hovering over them . A highly placed source has hinted The Vanguard. "Kondengui Central Prison awaits many of them.It has just started with the shocking news of embezzlement of public funds to the tune of 190 million involving mayor Bikoula Bekono of Mefou-et Afamba council in Centre region. Many of them will follow before the Legislative and Municipal elections ". A source who pleaded anonymity hinted. "No matter their family and political background, the years ahead will be catastrophic for mayors who have taken advantage of the porous administrative control to loot the councils." He disclosed. He said. Mayor Bikoula Bekono of Mefou-et-Afamba has been placed under a committal warrant at the Kondengui central prison. Bikoula Bekono is said to have swindled FCFA190 million. He noted that most municipal authorities run the councils like village provision stores from where they make their money .
According to judicial sources, his arrest comes on the heels of an in-depth investigation carried out by the competent authorities with the aim of combating mismanagement of public funds. The case is said to be part of a national programme sparked by increasing strong desire on the part of the public authorities to strengthen local governance to restore confidence between citizens and institutions.

The name of Bikoula Bekono, until now, was little known to the public.
His scandal raises many questions about transparency in the management of funds allocated to municipal authorities, as well as the effectiveness of budgetary control mechanisms at the local level.

Cameroonians are increasingly sensitive to issues of governance and management of public funds .The arrest of the mayors reaffirms the importance of the fight against impunity in the management of public institutions.
