Demise on Mile 2 bridge - Nkwen blamed on Insecurity and Negligence
The demise of the temporal bridge mounted by BUNS to ease movement of pedestrian as they work on the mile 2 giant bridge has been blamed on Security challenges and Negligence.
"There couldn't have been any death,if people listened to me". says one Pa Ngwa Athanatius who witnessed the carnage.
Talking to the Vanguard Friday, March 23rd, Pa Ngwa said,i saw it happening.There were more than 20 people on the temporal bridge when it happened. " Before it happened, I told those who were rushing to cross the bridge when it was raining that it was not safe for them to climb on the bridge because it was shaking and I got the sound of a cracked of the bridge" . He said. The right handle of the bridge,he went on had earlier on collapsed,yet no one cared to avoid the bridge".
The volume of water almost touched the bridge, and the velocity of the stream was very high. I woned people not climb on the bridge. They insisted on crossing ,and the bridge collapsed, and swept away more than 20 people but some succeed to come out while others rescued by the northwest fire bridge" Although the company may have her own share of the blame, much of the blame goes to the victims who refused to heed to my advice ". He said .
They neglected their own safely by taking risk to climb the dilapidated bridge. The basement of the bridge was already swept away by water and the bridge was swinging.This was an indication that it was going to collapse. Yet no one listened to me" . He lamented.
Another interviewee Ade Peter the Vanguard accosted blamed the tragedy on insecurity challenges.
He said 6:30 to 7 pm is rush hour in Bamenda given the security concerns. He explained that
most parts of Bamenda since the escalation of the Anglophone crisis is infected by men of the underworld who are noted for aggression and kidnapping of the population for ransom. He explained that most people like to be in their homes before 7 pm.
Armed rubbers are said to have evaded the town,l and "wrecking havoc on the population especially between the hours of 6 to 8 :00 pm" .
This he said ,explains why most people were struggling get home on good time and never had to patience to wait for the rains to cease and the drop in volume of water flowing under the makshift bridge.
He cited mile 3 mile 4 Nkwen, Ntamuche,Namuh, Mbessi as the most dangerous quarters of Nkwen.
He opined that most people were impatient because of the security challenges in Bamenda town.
He also debunked claims of witch hunting as opinion by some pundits..
Contacted to comment on the situation, Njong Ignatius, Director of work of BUNS Construction company currently working on the bridge, lamented the situation while intimating that the company will condole and accompany affected families as they mourn their love ones.
The Regional Delegate of Public Works for the Northwest West region, Nfor Cyprain Ngenge,while also lamenting the unfortunate situation, send words of comfort to the affected families.
In an exclusive with The Vanguard, Nfor Cyprain Ngenge cautioned the population against neglect of their safety when rains. He exhorted the population to avoid the use of temporal bridges when it rains heavily.
The Double carriage
road works under construction by BUNS Construction company stretches from Amour Mezam, through old Finance junction, Miss Ngeng, vertinary junction, Ayaba street, Metah Quarter, Hospital Roundabout, Food market, City Chemist and back to veterinary junction will embellish Bamenda town in the months ahead in spite of all odds.
The 6 2 kilometers double carriage raod funded by World Bank couple with orher perifiral or quarter roads will completely change Bamenda town upon completion. It is this premise that Minister of Publicworks Emmanuel Nganou Njoumessi during an official visit to Bamenda recently to evaluate the state of work on the road ahead of the Pope's visit exhorted the population of Bamenda town to accompany the government in the road construction projects in the entire region. Emmanuel Nganou Njoumessi intimated that Bamenda, Bafut- Wum road: Bamenda Tugi Mbengwi Road: Bamenda, Bambui, Ndop Babessi amongst other roads of the region will be constructed . "I urge you to accompany the government and the companies working in the region to enable the government of Cameroon to realize all the projects meant to improve on your living conditions. He said.
